Description

Bhagavad-gita: The Rap of God The fearless and powerful warrior Arjuna sees friends and relatives dressed for war and itching to kill him. Dropping his bow, he slumps in his chariot and tells his driver Krishna, “I can’t do it.” In that intense moment the two friends begin a blunt, penetrating talk. Afterwards, Arjuna picks up his bow and declares, “Our cause is just. Now I’m ready. We will win.” What did Krishna say in that short conversation? The Bhagavad-gita answers that question, an answer that over thousands of years has inspired millions of people to overcome depression, fear and inner conflict. This concise, entertaining edition updates this classic with contemporary language and a helpful Q&A section on how to apply to the Gita’s teachings in daily life.

Accurate, artistic & SO MUCH FUN!

I am a public university Chaplain and teach weekly from the Bhagavad-gita since 2012. There are hundreds upon hundreds of translations and commentaries on the Gita. Not one of those is stylized in American English vernacular. The Rap of God accomplishes what no other Gita presentation has: it presents the philosophical content with integrity and precision, while inviting the reader (and rapper!) from traditional rhyming Sanskrit verse into the modern western landscape of hip-hop.

In all seriousness, The Rap of God is SO MUCH FUN to pass around with my students. Each takes a turn rapping sections of Krishna and Arjuna’s sacred, universally relevant conversation. One of the students updates an ongoing playlist of hip-hop background beats to create a rhythm and flow as we rap. We pass around a graffiti insignia ‘Krishna’ ball cap as we take turns rapping His words. Everyone cheers after someone has rapped–it takes guts to spit it out, especially for people who are brand new to this genre. No matter a student’s previous exposure to rap, literally all are grabbing at the chance to try it, simply because it’s so fun.

In my years of sharing Gita wisdom, this text has made the conversation far more energetic, digestible, entertaining, and retainable. College students sit in lecture halls for hours at a time. They don’t need another stuffy read-through or dry presentation. This does neither them nor the Gita any justice– for both are full of joy, life and energy. Students deserve to see Krishna as the author has– an approachable God who invites seekers to develop knowledge and relationship with Him no matter their cultural or generational context. And they are. They ask more questions, share more insights and walk away super excited for next week’s gathering. Mission accomplished.

As the author implores, Krishna is so cool that simply by rapping about Him, we can attain happiness that far exceeds our expectations. The ancient Bhagavad-gita is honored truthfully, boldly and downright funkily in this rendition. Read it and see for yourself. It’s dope!

Its fun and yet deep! The book does an amazing job of presenting all the concepts of the Bhagavad Gita in rap form. It makes the Gita very easy to comprehend, and the fact that it’s in rap form, makes it fun to read!
